Cafeteria Worker Job Description
The food service worker reports directly to the Cafeteria Manager, who assigns daily work responsibilities. A good knowledge of food preparation and service is essential for the employee. The main function of this position is the proper preparation and presentation of the food served to customers in the school cafeterias.
Specific duties and requirements:
- Follow assigned work schedule to ensure that all work duties are completed as outlined by the Cafeteria Manager.
- Independently be able to prepare and serve food items according to recipes, menus, and directions.
- Maintain a clean kitchen, storeroom, and equipment.
- Practice good sanitation habits in handling foods and supplies.
- Be able to lift heavy items up to fifty pounds.
- Be able to work efficiently with large pots, pans, and other kitchen equipment. Lift heavy items overhead to reach shelves.
- Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
- Exhibit clean personal hygiene. Must use hair net as a hair restraint and tie back any long hair. No artificial nails or nail polish. No jewelry on hands or arms except a plain ring.
- Maintain consistent good health.
- Be dependable and responsible in performance of duties. Be able to independently complete assigned task in a timely fashion. Work at a fast pace and at extreme temperature differences (minus 5 degrees in a freezer to 90 degrees in a hot, fast paced kitchen—some do not have air conditioning).
- Exhibit a willingness to learn and take pride in accomplishments.
- Serve customers in a pleasant manner.
- Work well independently or with others.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager or Food Service Manager.
