Job Title:              Route Coordinator

Reports To:          Executive Director of Transportation

FLSA Status:        Exempt

 

This is a 260-day, 8 hour position on the N9 Payscale.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Coordinates and plans routes, establishes stops and times for school transportation vehicles.

Provides assistance to the Executive Director of Transportation in all aspects of the Transportation Department.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Establishes all bus routes and stops throughout the county;
  • Collects and enters transportation data on students enrolled in schools;
  • Maintains student list for each bus;
  • Gathers data on pupil enrollment for studies on school boundaries;
  • Checks and reviews a variety of data for accuracy, completeness and conformance to established standards and procedures;
  • Maintains records and generates appropriate reports;
  • Operates standard office equipment;
  • Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures;
  • Attends inservice training to develop and improve knowledge and skills;
  • Communicates with parents, school administrators and others on matters related to school boundaries, bus assignments and other transportation-related issues;
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
  • Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
  • Performs related tasks as assigned by Executive Director of Transportation in accordance with the school division policies and practices;
  • Assists the Executive Director of Transportation during regular work hours and with extracurricular/co-curricular activities which may extend beyond normal work hours.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to get along well with others.
  • Must possess demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in clerical and office procedures.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to obtain a CDL license with required bus stamps.
  • Must have knowledge and basic skills in use of technology and multiple software applications.
  • Must have knowledge of or experience with VDOT and Transportation rules and laws.
  • Must have knowledge of or experience with crisis management procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidate must possess any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s Degree or higher. Preference will be given to candidates with administrative and/or law enforcement or transportation logistics experience.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with parents, school administrators, and others on matters related to school boundaries, bus assignments and other transportation-related issues.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

This is sedentary work requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling, lifting up to approximately 50 pounds, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

 

EVALUATION

The Executive Director of Transportation will evaluate performance based on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
