PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: 

Social Workers in the school setting promote and enhance the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. Social Workers in the schools significantly contribute to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention strategies. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Participates in the special education identification process. This will include attendance at child study meetings, completion of socio-cultural interviews during a home visit, collection of medical information, adaptive behavior information, and parent checklists as needed. 
  2. Writes and presents socio-cultural reports at eligibility meetings. 
  3. Attends IEP and other school-based meetings as needed. 
  4. Provides consultation services regarding at-risk children to school staff and parents regarding academic or social needs. 
  5. Provides information regarding community services as needed, including access to basic needs. 
  6. Participates in various interagency committees and teams which coordinate service delivery. 
  7.  Assists in out-of-school placements as needed. 
  8. Conducts home visits to counsel with parents and students to address truancy and other socio-cultural needs. 
  9. Collaborate with K-8 students, parents and school staff to address barriers to regular attendance and student engagement, follow the attendance/truancy process, including meetings, FAPT referrals and filing court petitions.
  10. Provides brief therapy to families of at-risk students and assists in referring such families to appropriate community resources. 
  11. Assists with the development and provision of parent education and staff in-service programs regarding a variety of topics related to children and families. 
  12. Responds to crisis situations in tandem with colleagues and community personnel as needed.
  13. Writes clearly written and comprehensive reports. 
  14. Maintains accurate records of services provided. 
  15. Responds to parents, students and staff in a professional manner in all interactions. 
  16. Strives to help maintain a positive climate among staff and parents during meetings. 
  17. Attends all required meetings. Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality. 
  18. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the diversity of all individuals. 
  19. Interacts with students and parents in an ethical manner. 
  20. Maintains and respects confidentiality in all matters, including information pertaining to students, families and school personnel, while maintaining the safety and welfare of all students and staff members. 
  21. Acts in a supervisory capacity to undergraduate/graduate intern students as assigned
  22. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 
  23. Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children’s educational welfare. 
  24. Interprets and upholds School Board and special education policies, regulations and procedures. 
  25. Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Students Services 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited master’s program through the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia license with an endorsement as a school social worker.
  2. Knowledge of community resources and ability to collaborate with other service providers. 
  3. Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas. 
  4. Proficiency in the use of technology to complete essential job functions. 
  5. Leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and the community. 
  6. Ability to function effectively as a team member in determining appropriate services for children through such meetings as Child Study, Eligibility, IEP, and others as needed. 
  7. Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. 
  8.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain good working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers and community agencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. 

  1. Stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch. 
  2. Vocal communication, hearing and visual acuity is required for expressing or exchanging ideas. 
  3. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, students and parents are required. 
  4. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. 
  5. Candidate must possess good moral character and is expected to be a role model, in and out of the school or work setting.
